Open Door Initiative

Lincoln, Nebraska

The Open Door Initiative (ODI) is a collaboration between Friendship Home, Voices of Hope, St. Monica’s, and Center Pointe, Inc.  Friendship Home is an agency that provides a continuum of safe, confidential shelter and support options for women and children experiencing domestic violence.  Voices of Hope provides 24-hour crisis services for survivors of domestic and sexual assault.  St. Monica’s is a gender-specific, trauma-informed substance abuse and mental health treatment organization that serves women diagnosed with drug or alcohol dependence.  CenterPointe, Inc. offers a continuum of care to persons with co-occuring mental health and substance use disorders.

Our Unique Contributions

Domestic violence frequently intersects with mental health concerns and substance use issues, creating a greater risk to survivors’ physical and emotional safety, and barriers to accessing services. The tools and resources developed by ODI have been designed to address this critical need, with the goal of improving services for survivors regardless of which agency they contact.  ODI developed a comprehensive intake tool to identify the unique needs of survivors, and training to assist agency staff to become more aware of the intersection of domestic violence, mental health and substance abuse, to help agencies become more trauma-informed.
