A Tribute to Hal Schultz

In January, we lost a dedicated self-advocate in Hal Schultz .  We will remember the great work he was a part of with the Self-Advocate Coalition of Kansas as a leader in this field who was able to demonstrate survivor-centered approaches in all that he did.  Please see the touching tribute below the collaboration Kansas BELIEVE has written in his honor.

In Memory of Hal Schultz

“Kansas BELIEVE Team member Hal Schultz, Self-Advocate Coalition of Kansas (SACK) Self-advocate, died in his sleep on January 11, 2017.  Hal worked for SACK for more than 9 years. Hal was a strong advocate and passionate about improving responses to people with I/DD who are survivors of sexual violence.

In memory of Hal, the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence awarded him The State Level Ally of the Year award.  The award is given to an ally who demonstrates the commitment to enhance victim safety, increase perpetrator accountability or work to end or prevent sexual or domestic violence, stalking or dating violence on a state level.

Hal demonstrated his commitment through his work with the Self Advocate Coalition of Kansas and on the Kansas BELIEVE collaboration with KCSDV. Hal was a dear friend and important ally to many people. Hal demonstrated leadership, public service, and advocacy.  His work with KCSDV and with the Self Advocate Coalition of Kansas was always victim-centered and empowerment-based.

Hal was an example of self-determination – he directed his own life without fear or permission from others.

Hal always took his work seriously. He was thoughtful of others.  He wanted self-advocates to know that they always had the right to decide for themselves.  In Kansas BELIEVE team meetings, he was able to pull ideas together in a profound and inclusive way.

Hal was our friend and we will miss him.”
