WSCADV Model Protocol: Safety Planning for Domestic Violence Victims with Disabilities

Author: Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Publication Date: January 2010

Developed by the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, this protocol is intended to support domestic violence agencies in strengthening and increasing their safety planning services to people with disabilities.  This resource advances self-determination for survivors with disabilities by offering safety planning that is cognizant of environmental and social barriers. Additionally, the information in this protocol builds on existing safety planning knowledge and does not review basic safety planning strategies. Sample safety planning questions are provided that will help advocates build trust with a survivor and gain a detailed understanding of the ways an abuser can use  disability against a survivor.
