Welcome to the Deaf Advocate Virtual Training, developed by Deaf Action. Thank you for your commitment to supporting survivors and healing communities!
This training is for Deaf people new to the work of DVSV advocacy. The purpose is to provide new Deaf advocates with the basic skills needed to effectively support Deaf survivors of domestic and sexual violence (DVSV). You will gain critical understanding of the unique needs of Deaf survivors, information that is not available in most standard advocate trainings. After this training, along with your state certification training, you will have a foundational understanding of the dynamics of DVSV, be able to describe strategies for effective advocacy for Deaf survivors, and be able to identify approaches to addressing barriers for Deaf survivors. This training is created as a supplement to your state training, it does not provide advocate certification. Training was developed with the support of the Office on Violence Against Women.
Each lesson has videos in ASL with key concepts. To support your learning journey, there are activities such as self-reflection and journaling (in ASL or English), research questions and discussion topics for your advocacy team. Deaf Action facilitators are available to discuss content and answer questions.
